Batmud Damage Information
Here is a list of some of the more common messages that physical attack forms can produce. Due to the large number of factors that can influence how damaging an attack is, there is essentailly no way to associate a specific damage message with a specific range of hit point loss. The information given here should only be taken as a rough scale of how damaging any particuar attack is.

Attacks and damage types
Monster attacks
"Generic" monsters get between one and five attacks a round, depending on their level of power. What form these attacks take follows a standard pattern. Their first and/or second attacks will be with a claw or weapon, any third strike will be a bite, and any additional attacks will be brawling. For example, a generic monster that attacks three times a round will follow a claw/claw/bite pattern, and one which gets four a round will follow a claw/claw/bite/brawl pattern.
You can usually get a good estimate of how hard a fight will be simply by noting how many attacks the monster gets. Weak monsters tend to get few attacks, so they are doubly easy to kill; they hit like sissies and don't get to swing often. Higher power monsters get four or more attacks, so they both hit hard AND get more attacks to hit hard with!
Most monsters in the game follow the aforementioned standard attack progression, but there are also plenty of exceptions to look out for. There are weak monsters that get eight inconsequential attacks a round, and there are fairly tough monsters that get one HUGE bite per round.
Claw
If a generic monster doesn't have a weapon wielded, it's unarmed attacks usually fall under this category. Claws are probably always cutting attacks. Keep in mind it's not too uncommon for monsters to do elemental damage with their physical attacks, this is usually only important to players with lots of physical damage resistance.
Bite
If a generic monster has three or more attacks, the third will be a bite. Bites are probably always stabbing attacks. Keep in mind it's not too uncommon for monsters to do elemental damage with their physical attacks, this is usually only important to players with lots of physical damage resistance.
Brawling
Brawling is what players do when wielding a nonweapon, and how they fight unarmed if they don't know martial arts. The brawling skill players can get is almost completely useless except for helping them parry with nonweapons. When monsters dish out brawling attacks, it usually means they're pretty big, and unlike players they can do a lot of damage with them. Brawling is probably always a bashing attack.
Martial Arts (both kinds)
Tigers and Monks use slightly different forms of martial arts, but they are fairly similar in the long run. You may need to quit/re-enter after first training martial arts to have your unarmed attacks do real damage instead of brawling damage. Martial art attacks seem to score much more random critical hits than any other attack. Some monsters use martial arts, and their criticals can be quite nasty. No, the game doesn't crash if you somehow join both the Tiger and Monk guilds.
Piercing
Some short blades and most polearms do this damage.
Bludgeons
Nearly all weapons which are used with the bludgeons skill do this kind of damage. Not much else to be said. Unknown but doubtful if they give a bigger stun chance.
Slashing
Some short blades and most long blades do this damage.
Whips
A very rarely seen attack form, so rare that some assume that whip attacks are custom coded for each monster.
